What you'll learn

  • Explain why falls from height happen, how fast they occur and why they cause so many serious injuries and deaths
  • Describe Canadian fall protection law, trigger heights, training requirements including Ontario Working at Heights, and the CSA Z259 standards
  • Assess fall hazards and apply the hierarchy of controls, from elimination to administrative controls
  • Specify guardrails, protective covers and safety nets, including their dimensions, loads and inspection
  • Set up travel restraint correctly and explain the limits of warning lines, control zones and safety monitors
  • Select, fit and inspect full body harnesses and connectors as part of a personal fall arrest system
  • Choose between energy-absorbing lanyards and self-retracting devices and estimate arrest forces
  • Select anchors and anchorage connectors, apply anchor strength requirements and avoid improvised anchors
  • Calculate total fall clearance, recognize and limit swing falls, and explain horizontal lifeline forces
  • Protect workers on low-slope and steep roofs, at skylights, leading edges, floor openings and hoist areas
  • Plan prompt rescue of a suspended worker and explain suspension intolerance and aftercare
  • Manage a fall protection program, learn from incidents and write a fall protection plan for a rooftop task
