Working at Heights and Fall Protection
Preventing falls from height and protecting workers when a fall is possible: the physics of falls, OSHA 1910 Subparts D and I and 1926 Subpart M, training requirements and the ANSI/ASSP Z359 standards, hazard assessment and the hierarchy of controls, guardrails, covers and nets, travel restraint, warning lines and controlled access zones, harnesses, connectors, lanyards and self-retracting devices, anchors, clearance and swing falls, horizontal lifelines, roofs and leading edges, rescue and suspension intolerance, and a capstone rooftop fall protection plan.

What you'll learn
- Explain why falls from height happen, how fast they occur and why they cause so many serious injuries and deaths
- Describe OSHA fall protection standards in general industry and construction, trigger heights, training requirements and the ANSI/ASSP Z359 standards
- Assess fall hazards and apply the hierarchy of controls, from elimination to administrative controls
- Specify guardrails, protective covers and safety nets, including their dimensions, loads and inspection
- Set up travel restraint correctly and explain the limits of warning lines, control zones and safety monitors
- Select, fit and inspect full body harnesses and connectors as part of a personal fall arrest system
- Choose between energy-absorbing lanyards and self-retracting devices and estimate arrest forces
- Select anchors and anchorage connectors, apply anchor strength requirements and avoid improvised anchors
- Calculate total fall clearance, recognize and limit swing falls, and explain horizontal lifeline forces
- Protect workers on low-slope and steep roofs, at skylights, leading edges, floor openings and hoist areas
- Plan prompt rescue of a suspended worker and explain suspension intolerance and aftercare
- Manage a fall protection program, learn from incidents and write a fall protection plan for a rooftop task
