What you'll learn
- Define a confined space, recognize confined spaces in different sectors and explain why their hazards so often kill workers and would-be rescuers
- Describe the main provincial and federal confined space regulations in Canada and the role of CSA Z1006
- Identify, classify and inventory confined spaces, secure their openings and look for ways to avoid entry
- Explain how oxygen deficiency and enrichment occur, their effects on the body, and how to interpret oxygen readings including at altitude
- Explain flammable limits and percent LEL, identify common toxic gases, convert ppm to mg/m³ and compare exposure limits
- Describe how gas detectors work, the testing sequence, sampling at several levels, bump testing, calibration, continuous monitoring and alarm response
- Recognize engulfment, flooding, entrapment, energy, temperature, electrical, fall and biological hazards and the methods used to isolate a space
- Explain cleaning, purging, ventilation and inerting, and estimate purge times and delivered airflow
- Describe the contents of an entry permit and the duties of entrants, attendants and entry supervisors, including communication methods
- Plan confined space rescue using self-rescue, non-entry retrieval and entry rescue, and judge whether a rescue service can respond in time
- Analyse confined space incidents using barrier analysis and identify the common contributing factors
- Explain how confined space programs, training, contractor coordination and reviews are managed, and draft an entry plan for a typical space
