Aerial Work Platform Awareness
For supervisors and workers who use or work around scissor lifts, vertical mast lifts and boom lifts (awareness training, not operator training or familiarization): how falls, ejection, overturns, entrapment and electrocution happen, duties under 29 CFR 1926.453, 1926.451, 1926.452(w), 1926.454 and 1910.67 and the ANSI/SAIA A92.20, A92.22 and A92.24 standards, MEWP groups, types and safety features, the safe use plan and site assessment, pre-start inspection and function tests, ground bearing pressure, mats and stability, travel restraint on designated anchorages, secondary guarding and safe travel, power line clearances, wind and weather, loads, dropped objects and exiting at height, emergency lowering and rescue, 1904.39 reporting, and a capstone safe use plan review.

What you'll learn
- Explain how MEWP incidents happen through falls and ejection, overturns, entrapment, electrocution and struck-by events, and why awareness training is not operator training or familiarization.
- Describe the duties of owners, users, supervisors, operators and occupants under 29 CFR 1926.453, 1926.451, 1926.452(w), 1926.454, 1910.67 and the ANSI/SAIA A92 standards.
- Classify MEWPs by group and type, recognize their safety features and read a specification plate for height, rated load, persons, wind, slope and wheel load.
- Prepare and review a safe use plan, including a site assessment, slope conversions, machine selection, crew briefing and triggers for reassessment.
- Describe the levels of MEWP inspection and carry out or supervise a pre-use inspection, function tests and the removal of defective machines from service.
- Explain MEWP stability, calculate platform shift on slopes and ground bearing pressure, size outrigger mats and apply boom load envelopes.
- Select and supervise fall protection on MEWPs, emphasizing travel restraint on designated anchorages, and calculate restraint lanyard limits and fall arrest clearance.
- Prevent entrapment and struck-by incidents through safe travel, secondary guarding, spotters, tail swing control and safe platform practices.
- Apply limits of approach to overhead power lines, respond to contact, estimate wind at height and wind force on panels, and control lightning, cold, heat and exhaust hazards.
- Account for all loads on the platform, control dropped objects, and plan materials handling, hot work and exiting at height within manufacturer and legal limits.
- Plan emergency lowering and rescue, including the trained ground person, ground controls, auxiliary power, manual descent, entrapment release, reporting and drills.
- Review a MEWP safe use plan as a supervisor, identify weaknesses, work the key calculations and set out a compliant revised plan.
