What you'll learn
- Analyze linear and saturating magnetic circuits with air gaps, and apply Faraday's law, inductance, core-loss and force relations to machine design
- Calculate forces and torques from field energy and co-energy, explain reluctance and mutual torque, and size machines from air-gap shear stress
- Model single- and three-phase transformers from open- and short-circuit tests, and calculate regulation, efficiency, fault current and connection effects
- Select transformer vector groups and grounding, analyze parallel operation and tap changing, assess harmonic loading, and apply thermal ageing models and condition assessment
- Apply the EMF and torque equations to DC generators and motors, and design starting and speed control including field weakening
- Explain distributed AC windings, calculate pitch, distribution and winding factors, derive the rotating magnetic field, and assess unbalance and single phasing
- Use the induction motor equivalent circuit to predict torque, efficiency and starting performance, and select starting methods, drives and protection
- Calculate starting dynamics, apply V/f and field-oriented control with Clarke and Park transforms, select braking methods, and analyze induction and doubly fed generators
- Analyze synchronous generators and motors with phasor and power-angle models, excitation control, V-curves, synchronizing and capability limits
- Apply two-reaction theory to salient-pole machines, calculate short-circuit currents from subtransient and transient reactances, and assess transient stability with the swing equation and equal-area criterion
- Explain and compare permanent magnet, brushless DC, reluctance, stepper, single-phase and universal motors, including MTPA control and field-weakening hazards
- Apply insulation classes, derating, testing, condition monitoring and protection to specify and maintain motor systems over their life cycle
