What you'll learn

  • Solve first-order RC and RL transients by inspection and classify second-order RLC responses
  • Analyse second-order circuits from initial conditions to complete step responses, and relate damping ratio to overshoot, peak time and settling time
  • Represent sinusoids as phasors and analyse AC circuits with impedance, nodal and mesh methods and Thévenin equivalents
  • Apply nodal and mesh analysis, Thévenin and Norton equivalents and superposition to AC circuits, including sources at different frequencies and op-amp circuits
  • Calculate real, reactive, apparent and complex power, correct power factor, apply maximum power transfer and account for harmonics
  • Analyse magnetically coupled coils and ideal and practical transformers, including reflected impedance, equivalent-circuit tests, regulation and efficiency
  • Analyse balanced three-phase wye and delta systems per phase, calculate three-phase power and neutral currents
  • Analyse unbalanced three-phase loads and floating neutrals, quantify voltage unbalance, and apply symmetrical components to neutral currents and faults
  • Determine frequency responses, draw Bode plots, and design passive, resonant and active filters
  • Solve circuits with the Laplace transform, using s-domain models, partial fractions, transfer functions, poles and stability
  • Represent periodic waveforms by Fourier series and analyse circuits with non-sinusoidal sources, harmonic distortion, triplen neutral currents and true power factor
  • Characterize two-port networks, explain how circuit simulators work, and design and verify a filter using the methods of the course
