What you'll learn

  • Lay out data centre cabling to TIA-942: entrance rooms, MDAs, HDAs, ZDAs and EDAs in a hierarchical star, with cross-connects, switch placement, redundancy and labelling
  • Select copper and fibre media for each link from its length, speed, optics, lifetime cost and upgrade path
  • Explain channel and permanent-link models, copper transmission parameters, alien crosstalk and shielding, and design Power over Ethernet for loss and bundle heating
  • Explain fibre attenuation, modal and chromatic dispersion, bend-insensitive fibre, reflectance and wavelength-division multiplexing, and their effect on link design
  • Relate transceiver lanes, modulation, form factors and optical interfaces to the fibre types, connectors and fibre counts the plant must provide, including breakouts
  • Design pre-terminated MPO fibre systems, verify polarity, calculate channel loss budgets and specify testing
  • Write test specifications with correct reference methods and limits, interpret OTDR traces, and troubleshoot failed or degrading links
  • Size cable trays for fill and weight, apply bend radius, conduit, separation, fire rating, firestopping and bonding requirements
  • Design cabling for AI clusters, counting links and fibres for rail-optimized fabrics and planning switch placement and pathways at scale
  • Lay out cabinets and cable managers for airflow and maintainability, and administer the plant with TIA-606 identifiers, records and change control
  • Plan outside plant, diverse routes and building entrances, calculate long-link budgets and the availability benefit of diversity
  • Deliver a cabling project from requirements to handover, calculating trunk lengths, loss budgets and pathway fill and coordinating with other trades
