What you'll learn

  • Describe the flows of goods and waste through a store backroom, the main backroom hazards and how injury rates by area show where to act first.
  • Explain the OSHA and Washington rules that matter most in the backroom (1910.178 and WAC 296-863, machine guarding and lockout, 1910.176, 1910.28, 1910.37 and 1910.159, and the child labor hazardous occupations orders) and the multi-employer citation policy.
  • Receive deliveries safely: restrain trailers, support dropped trailers, check levelers and dock plates, prevent falls from the dock and control reversing trucks where there is no dock.
  • Unload palletized and floor-loaded freight with most lifts in the comfortable zone, use conveyors and strapping cutters safely and plan crews so lifting rates stay sustainable.
  • Use manual pallet jacks, hand trucks, carts and roll cages safely, estimate pushing forces and decide when a load needs a powered jack.
  • Operate powered pallet jacks safely, separate people and equipment, track operator training and evaluation, and charge batteries safely.
  • Explain how selective pallet racking works, check loads against level and bay limits, and identify, grade and report rack damage.
  • Prevent falls, falling objects and blocked sprinklers when storing stock at height, including on mezzanines and never on cooler roofs.
  • Describe baler and compactor hazards and safeguards, operate a baler safely, handle bales, and apply Hazardous Order No. 12 for young workers.
  • Lock out balers, compactors and conveyors with a machine-specific procedure, verify zero energy and check lockout records.
  • Keep exits, extinguishers and panels clear, control fire load and chemicals, manage waste and score housekeeping over time.
  • Plan and carry out a backroom inspection, rate findings, choose and rank controls, justify investments with evidence, and write and measure an improvement plan.
