What you'll learn

  • Explain why labs, shops, art rooms and food rooms carry higher risks than ordinary classrooms, and check any specialized room against the room, the equipment, the people and the procedures.
  • Evaluate a science lab's layout, ventilation, fume hood and emergency equipment, including eyewash stations, safety showers, shut-offs and fire equipment.
  • Keep a chemical inventory, store chemicals by compatibility, manage chemicals that become more dangerous with age, and plan a yearly clear-out.
  • Carry out a hazard review for experiments and demonstrations, and explain how flash fires with flammable liquids happen and how to prevent them.
  • Handle preserved specimens, sharps, microorganisms, classroom animals and biological waste safely.
  • Apply machine guarding, safe operating rules, student training and sign-off, and lockout in technology shops.
  • Control wood dust, noise, fumes from 3D printers and laser cutters, finishes and housekeeping hazards in shops.
  • Control the hazards of welding, grinding, automotive work and construction technology projects.
  • Set up and run art rooms safely, including kilns, clay and silica dust, glazes, solvents, spray products and printmaking.
  • Prevent burns, cuts, fires, slips and foodborne illness in food rooms, and manage food allergens.
  • Manage chemical waste, respond to spills and exposures, and report and investigate incidents in specialized rooms under Ontario requirements.
  • Teach and supervise safe practices, plan for substitutes and other users, and build a yearly safety check of a school's specialized rooms.
