What you'll learn

  • Calculate commercial service and feeder loads under Rule 8-210 and Table 14, apply demand factors, voltage drop, taps and parallel conductors, and explain when ground fault protection is required
  • Select commercial and industrial wiring methods and calculate conduit fill, bends, box fill, PVC expansion and support, cable tray and busway use, and firestopping
  • Size motor branch circuit conductors, overload protection, short-circuit protection, disconnects and feeders for single and multiple motors and drives, and read three-wire control circuits
  • Apply overcurrent device ratings, estimate available fault current, verify interrupting ratings and SCCRs, protect transformers and secondary conductors, and recognize arc flash requirements
  • Classify hazardous locations by zone or division, group and temperature code, select protection methods and equipment markings, and apply sealing and intrinsic safety rules
  • Ground and bond commercial and industrial systems, including services, separately derived systems, impedance grounding, bonding conductor sizing and grounding electrodes
  • Apply the special rules for health care facilities, pools, electric vehicle charging, photovoltaic and storage systems, fire pumps and information technology rooms
  • Apply requirements for industrial control panels, SCCR, enclosures and heat, PLC wiring, machine safety circuits and lockout
  • Distinguish emergency, required standby and optional standby systems, and apply rules for sources, transfer switches, wiring separation, selective coordination, generator sizing and testing
  • Install and verify fire alarm circuits, supervision, notification appliance voltage drop, batteries, Class 2 wiring, structured cabling and Power over Ethernet
  • Design commercial lighting branch circuits, LED driver loading, dimming and energy-code lighting controls, and site and sign lighting
  • Plan permits, inspections, pre-energization tests, commissioning and documentation, and prepare the electrical design of a small commercial building
