What you'll learn

  • Identify the battery systems found in a data center, including UPS battery rooms and cabinets, BESS, rack-level battery units and smaller batteries, and explain why stored battery energy cannot be switched off.
  • Map the US rules for battery systems, including OSHA standards, the National Electrical Code Articles 480 and 706, the International Fire Code and NFPA 1, NFPA 855, UL 1973, UL 9540 and UL 9540A, NFPA 70E, HazCom and the DOT hazardous materials regulations.
  • Assess and control the shock and DC arc flash hazards of battery strings, including tier voltages, ground faults, unprotected faults within strings, sectioning, insulated tools and PPE.
  • Describe the chemical hazards of lead-acid, lithium-ion and nickel-cadmium electrolytes and failure gases, apply exposure limits, and plan eyewash, spill neutralization and first aid, including for hydrogen fluoride.
  • Calculate hydrogen generation from lead-acid batteries using Faraday's law and explain how ventilation, detection and ignition control keep battery rooms below 25 percent of the lower flammable limit.
  • Explain how lithium-ion cells, modules and racks are built and how the battery management system protects them, and use monitoring data to identify early warning signs.
  • Explain the causes, stages and propagation of thermal runaway, the differences between fire, explosion and toxic release outcomes, and the hazard of stranded energy.
  • Describe layers of protection for battery rooms, including off-gas, gas and smoke detection, exhaust ventilation for explosion prevention, deflagration venting, and estimate mixture flammable limits with Le Chatelier's rule.
  • Evaluate the capabilities and limits of suppression for battery fires and apply separation, compartmentation and stored energy limits, including the role of large-scale fire testing.
  • Plan safe battery maintenance, handling, relocation, storage, transport and disposal, including the effect of temperature on battery life.
  • Prepare and carry out an emergency response to battery incidents, including entry decisions, remote isolation, fire service coordination and post-event monitoring.
  • Analyze published battery incidents and conduct a battery room risk review that prioritizes findings and assigns corrective actions.
