This is the American version of this course. See the Canadian version.
What you'll learn
- Calculate data center heat loads and airflow or water flow requirements, and apply the ASHRAE thermal guidelines and efficiency metrics
- Calculate moist-air properties and analyze sensible cooling, dehumidification, mixing and evaporative processes, and apply humidity limits
- Design air cooling with hot and cold aisles and containment, apply the fan laws, and assess airflow with RCI, RTI and CFD
- Explain how cooling coils and terminal units work, compare perimeter, fan-wall, in-row and rear-door equipment, and select and size them at real conditions
- Explain chiller efficiency and heat rejection, size condenser water, pumping and thermal storage, and address refrigerant regulations
- Design hydronic systems using pump and system curves, pipe pressure drop, variable-flow pumping and high temperature differences, with glycol and water quality managed
- Evaluate economizer modes and hours, evaporative cooling, cooling tower water use and WUE, and the water-energy trade-off
- Specify control architectures, sensors, PID tuning, sequences of operation and alarm management for cooling systems
- Design direct-to-chip and immersion liquid cooling systems, work the temperature chain, and assess heat reuse
- Design cooling for AI halls, splitting liquid and air loads, sizing CDUs and loops, working the temperature chain and handling transient loads
- Assess cooling reliability, redundancy, common-mode failures, thermal ride-through, commissioning and maintenance
- Model annual cooling energy, evaluate PUE, WUE, CUE, refrigerants and heat reuse, and carry out a complete cooling design
