What you'll learn

  • Describe continuous, batch and discrete processes and read P&IDs, ISA tag numbers and loop diagrams
  • Select, range and install pressure and level instruments, including hydrostatic, radar and ultrasonic level measurement
  • Apply flowmeter principles including square root extraction and magmeter grounding, and wire thermocouples and RTDs correctly
  • Explain control valve characteristics, fail-safe action, positioners and output loop compliance, and other final control elements
  • Install instrument cable with correct segregation and shield grounding, calibrate transmitters and perform loop checks
  • Recognize cascade, feedforward, ratio, split range and override strategies, set controller action and tune loops in the field
  • Classify hazardous locations, select protection methods and temperature classes, and verify intrinsically safe loops with entity parameters
  • Design PV strings within voltage limits, select inverters and interconnections, and apply rapid shutdown and commissioning tests
  • Compare battery chemistries, size energy storage, explain BMS functions and apply code and fire safety requirements
  • Size EV charging circuits, interpret the control pilot, apply energy management and install and troubleshoot EVSE
  • Wire and supervise fire alarm circuits, implement interfaces to building systems and support integrated testing
  • Install and test standby generators and transfer switches, and assemble an integrated commissioning package
