What you'll learn
- Explain how motors produce torque, relate power, torque and speed, and interpret every field of a motor nameplate
- Describe the rotating field, synchronous speed, slip and torque-speed curve of three-phase induction motors, and assess voltage variation and unbalance
- Explain, connect, reverse and test single-phase, DC, electronically commutated, servo and stepper motors
- Store, mount, connect, insulation-test and align motors, and set up belt drives and bearing lubrication
- Size motor branch-circuit conductors, short-circuit and ground-fault protection, overloads, disconnects and feeders to the electrical code
- Select and maintain contactors and starters, and choose and set overload relays and motor protection
- Identify, wire and apply pilot devices, relays, timers, process switches, proximity and photoelectric sensors and emergency stops
- Read and draw ladder diagrams for two-wire, three-wire, multiple-station and hand-off-auto control with correct control power arrangements
- Design and troubleshoot reversing, jogging, sequence, two-speed and braking circuits with appropriate interlocks
- Compare and apply reduced-voltage starting methods and soft starters, including voltage dip estimates and overload settings
- Explain, install, set up and safely work on variable frequency drives, including harmonics, reflected waves and energy savings
- Troubleshoot motor control systems systematically and plan preventive and predictive maintenance
