What you'll learn
- Explain why chemical storage incidents happen and describe the life cycle of a chemical from purchase to disposal.
- Identify the hazard communication, occupational safety, fire code and environmental rules that apply to chemical storage in the United States, including OSHA HazCom, 1910.106, NFPA 30 and RCRA.
- Use hazard classes and safety data sheet information to assign chemicals to storage groups.
- Apply a compatibility table to separate or isolate incompatible chemicals and build a segregation plan.
- Specify shelving, secondary containment, cabinets, storage rooms and outdoor storage suited to the chemicals held.
- Classify flammable and combustible liquids under both GHS categories and fire code classes and check quantities against code limits.
- Store corrosives, oxidizers, reactive chemicals and peroxide formers safely, controlling quantity, time and temperature.
- Secure, segregate and monitor compressed gas cylinders and cryogenic liquids, and estimate oxygen deficiency risk.
- Plan safe chemical transfers using enclosed methods, bonding and grounding, ventilation and labeled secondary containers.
- Specify, locate and maintain emergency eyewash and shower equipment, select chemical-protective gloves and direct first response to exposures.
- Apply storage principles in laboratories and small-quantity settings, including chemical hygiene plans, fume hoods and lab refrigerators.
- Manage waste chemicals and chemical inventories and prepare a chemical storage plan for a workplace.
