What you'll learn

  • Describe the main hazards of manufacturing and processing plants and explain how energy, people and systems combine in plant injuries.
  • Explain employer and worker duties under the OSH Act and OSHA standards, and the role of safety committees, worker participation and protection from retaliation.
  • Plan site orientation and contractor safety, including extra protection for new, young and temporary workers.
  • Identify plant hazards using energy sources, inspections and job hazard analysis.
  • Select safeguards for machines, conveyors, automated equipment and robots, and explain why guards must be designed for maintenance and cleaning.
  • Describe how a permit-to-work system controls hazardous non-routine work, including isolation, gas testing, handover and permit conflicts.
  • Apply fire prevention, hot work controls and housekeeping, including fire watch and combustible dust awareness.
  • Separate pedestrians from plant traffic and assess manual handling and lifting tasks.
  • Outline chemical and process hazards and the layers of protection used to prevent major accidents.
  • Recognize health hazards from noise, dust, fumes and heat, and interpret exposure monitoring results against limits.
  • Plan safe shutdowns and turnarounds, including scope control, simultaneous operations, contractor coordination and safe restart.
  • Prepare for plant emergencies and integrate the course topics into a working plant safety system.
