What you'll learn
- Apply a systematic seven-step troubleshooting method with half-splitting, root cause analysis and documentation
- Select and use multimeters, clamp meters, voltage testers and other instruments safely according to measurement category
- Perform continuity, insulation resistance, temperature correction, DAR and polarization index tests and interpret results
- Test grounding electrodes, fault return paths, GFCIs, RCDs and ground-fault protection, and locate objectionable current
- Locate opens, shorts, ground faults and high-resistance connections using voltage drop testing, thermography and cable fault methods
- Troubleshoot motors, starters and variable frequency drives, including voltage imbalance, winding tests and drive fault codes
- Identify and investigate sags, swells, transients, harmonics, flicker and imbalance with power quality analyzers
- Troubleshoot PLC-based control systems, safety circuits and industrial networks, and manage forcing and program changes
- Apply electrical safe work practices: hierarchy of controls, electrically safe work condition, approach boundaries, arc flash assessment and PPE
- Plan and carry out commissioning from pre-functional checks to start-up, functional and integrated testing and handover
- Perform and interpret acceptance tests on switchgear, breakers, relays, instrument transformers, transformers and MV cables
- Develop electrical maintenance programs using predictive and preventive techniques, records and trending
