What you'll learn

  • Idealize real structures as line models with appropriate supports and joints, and trace gravity and lateral load paths using tributary areas.
  • Determine dead, live and snow loads and apply NBC limit states load combinations, including uplift checks with the low dead load factor.
  • Classify plane structures as stable or unstable and determinate or indeterminate, and find reactions, including structures with internal hinges.
  • Analyse plane trusses by the method of joints and the method of sections, and identify zero-force members.
  • Draw shear and bending moment diagrams for determinate beams under point, uniform and linearly varying loads, including overhangs.
  • Analyse determinate frames, including three-hinged portals, and draw axial, shear and moment diagrams on the tension side of each member.
  • Analyse cables with the general cable theorem and three-hinged arches, and explain funicular shapes and thrust.
  • Construct influence lines for beams and trusses by equilibrium and by the Müller-Breslau principle, and use them to place live loads.
  • Find the maximum moment and shear caused by moving load groups such as crane wheels and the CSA S6 CL-625 truck.
  • Compute beam slopes and deflections by double integration, the moment-area theorems and the conjugate beam method, and check serviceability limits.
  • Compute displacements of trusses, beams and frames by virtual work, including temperature and fabrication effects.
  • Analyse simple indeterminate beams by the force method, and explain the effects of continuity, settlement and temperature.
