What you'll learn
- Frame a design problem, generate concepts and select among them with screening and weighted methods, including sensitivity checks
- Write verifiable requirements, apply codes and standards as constraints, and plan verification and validation
- Read and produce orthographic, isometric and section drawings with correct dimensions, tolerances and fits
- Write clear technical documents with correct units, figures, tables and citations
- Plan team projects with a charter, RACI matrix, critical path schedule and risk register, and handle feedback and conflict
- Sketch ideas freehand and build parametric 3D CAD models that capture design intent
- Select materials and manufacturing processes and estimate how cost depends on quantity
- Apply anthropometry, usability principles and accessibility requirements to designs
- Plan tests, quantify measurement uncertainty and analyze factorial experiments
- Use inherently safer design, FMEA, availability and life-cycle assessment in design decisions
- Deliver clear presentations and honest charts, and communicate risk to non-specialists
- Carry a team design project from problem framing to final report and presentation
