What you'll learn
- Select, inspect and use common hand tools for cutting, striking and gripping, applying the rules of right tool, right condition and right position.
- Read tape measures and rules accurately, check squares and use the 3-4-5 method and running measurements to avoid cumulative error.
- Use spirit levels, plumb bobs, chalk lines and laser levels to transfer level, plumb and elevations from benchmarks, and follow laser safety rules.
- Explain how grounding, double insulation and ground fault circuit interrupters protect against shock, inspect cords, size cords for voltage drop and handle lithium-ion batteries safely.
- Choose drills, drivers and bits for the material, calculate drill speeds, control reaction torque and silica dust, and check concrete for hidden services before drilling.
- Use power saws with their guards in place, explain and prevent kickback, and match blades to the material, arbor and tool speed.
- Select, inspect and mount abrasive wheels correctly, use grinders and cut-off saws safely, and follow hot work and dust control procedures.
- Describe the training, inspection, loading, firing and misfire rules for powder-actuated tools under Ontario's construction regulation, and use nail guns and compressed air safely.
- Identify nails, screws, bolts and nuts by type, size and grade, and choose fasteners and coatings for the materials and exposure.
- Explain how concrete, masonry and hollow-wall anchors hold, and install them following the manufacturer's requirements for hole size, cleaning, embedment, edge distance and cure.
- Recognize common construction materials, including lumber, engineered wood, steel, concrete, gypsum board, pipe and electrical cable, and handle and store them safely.
- Carry out pre-use and periodic tool inspections, tag and remove defective tools, maintain and secure tools, and build a quality personal tool kit.
