PRIN-101 · Lesson 3 of 12 · 28 min
PeopleCert, training providers and the PRINCE2 family
Before you book an exam it helps to understand who does what in the PRINCE2 world. One company owns the method and runs the exams, a network of independent companies provides training, a membership scheme supports continuing development, and several related certifications sit alongside PRINCE2 Project Management. This lesson maps those players and products, explains the difference between Foundation, Practitioner and the agile variants, and helps you decide which certification fits your role.
PeopleCert: owner and examination institute
PeopleCert is an international examination and certification company. Since acquiring AXELOS in 2021 it has owned PRINCE2 and ITIL, the IT service management framework, together with the related program, portfolio, risk and project office guidance. In the PRINCE2 world PeopleCert plays several roles at once:
- Publisher: it publishes the official manuals, including Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2, and the official translations.
- Examination institute: it writes, administers and scores the exams, issues certificates and digital badges and maintains the register of successful candidates.
- Accreditor: it accredits training organizations and trainers, and checks that their courses meet its standards.
- Membership body: it runs PeopleCert Plus, a subscription that provides access to digital resources, continuing professional development (CPD) tools and, under the current policy, a route to renew certifications by logging CPD points.
This concentration of roles is different from the way some other credentials are governed. PMI, for example, is a member-led professional association that writes its own standards and certifications but does not own a single delivery method, while PeopleCert is a commercial company. Neither model is better in itself, but it explains why PRINCE2 pricing, product names and renewal rules can change by company decision rather than through member votes.
Accredited training organizations
PeopleCert accredits training organizations, often called ATOs, to deliver PRINCE2 courses. An ATO might be a large international training company, a small specialist consultancy, a university continuing-education department or an in-house academy at a large employer. Accredited courses use approved materials, accredited trainers and, in many cases, include an exam voucher.
For Foundation, accredited training is not compulsory: you can buy an exam directly from PeopleCert or a reseller and study on your own. For Practitioner, the formal requirement is a valid prerequisite certification rather than a course, but most candidates find the open-book, scenario-based exam much easier after structured practice with a trainer. Lesson 5 explains the prerequisites in detail.
| Format | Typical length | Suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-study with an exam voucher | Your own pace | Disciplined learners on a budget | Make sure materials match PRINCE2 7 |
| Self-paced e-learning (accredited) | Weeks to months of access | Busy people who want structure | Access periods and whether the exam is included |
| Live virtual classroom | 2–3 days Foundation; 2–3 days Practitioner | People who learn best with a trainer | Time zone and pre-course reading |
| Classroom | Often a 5-day combined Foundation and Practitioner | Teams and those who want immersion | Travel costs and intensity |
| In-house corporate course | Tailored | Organizations adopting PRINCE2 | Whether it is accredited |
When you compare providers, check that the course is accredited for the current edition, what is included (manual, exam voucher, retake insurance, practice papers, e-learning access) and whether the exam is taken online or at the end of a classroom course. Very cheap offers sometimes leave out the official manual, which you need for the open-book Practitioner exam.
In the United States, accredited PRINCE2 training is offered by national and international training companies, usually as live virtual classes or self-paced e-learning, with fewer public classroom courses than in the UK. Because PRINCE2 is less common than PMI credentials in the US, check that the provider runs courses regularly and that its trainers know the current edition. Prices are usually quoted in US dollars.
Exams and certificates
PeopleCert exams for PRINCE2 can be taken online with remote proctoring, where a proctor watches through your webcam and the software locks down your computer, or on paper or computer at the end of an accredited course, depending on what the provider offers. When you pass, you receive an e-certificate and a digital badge, and your name is added to PeopleCert's register of successful candidates, which employers can check through its verification service. Lesson 4 explains what happens on exam day.
The PRINCE2 family
PRINCE2 Project Management is the core of a family of related certifications that, after the 2026 renaming, share the PRINCE2 brand. Each has its own manual and exams.
| Product | Former name | Focus | Levels |
|---|---|---|---|
| PRINCE2 Project Management | PRINCE2 7 | Directing, managing and delivering projects | Foundation, Practitioner |
| PRINCE2 Agile | PRINCE2 Agile | Combining PRINCE2 governance with agile delivery | Foundation, Practitioner |
| Program management | MSP | Coordinating related projects to deliver strategic change | Foundation, Practitioner |
| Portfolio management | MoP | Selecting and balancing an organization's change initiatives | Foundation, Practitioner |
| Risk management | M_o_R | Managing risk across an organization | Foundation, Practitioner |
| Project, program and portfolio office management | P3O | Designing and running support offices | Foundation, Practitioner |
The family matters for renewal. Under PeopleCert's current policy, passing a new certification within the same product suite renews all your certifications in that suite. Someone who holds PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner and then passes PRINCE2 Agile Foundation, for example, renews both. Lesson 11 returns to this.
PRINCE2 Agile
PRINCE2 Agile combines PRINCE2's governance and control with agile delivery approaches such as Scrum and Kanban. It explains how to tailor the principles, practices and processes when the work is done in short iterations, how to agree what is fixed and what can flex (typically time and cost are fixed while scope and quality criteria flex), and how to use agile behaviors, concepts and techniques within a PRINCE2 structure. A second version, aligned with PRINCE2 7, was introduced in 2025.
At the time of writing, training providers described the PRINCE2 Agile Version 2 Foundation exam as 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, closed book, with a pass mark of 24 (60 %), and the Practitioner exam as 50 scenario-based questions in 150 minutes, open book, with a pass mark of 30 (60 %). Check the current format with PeopleCert before booking. PRINCE2 Agile suits people who already work in agile teams inside organizations that need project-level governance, or project managers who must oversee agile suppliers.
Worked problem
Pass marks across the family
Calculate the number of correct answers needed to pass each exam, given a 60 % pass mark: PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation (60 questions), PRINCE2 Agile Foundation (40 questions) and PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner (50 questions).
Show solution
- Project Management Foundation: 0.60 × 60 = 36.
- Agile Foundation: 0.60 × 40 = 24.
- Agile Practitioner: 0.60 × 50 = 30.
Answer: 36, 24 and 30 correct answers respectively. A 60 % pass mark is common across the current PRINCE2 family.
Choosing the right certification for your role
Different people need different parts of the family. Ask what decisions you will be making and what your employer or clients expect.
| Role | Sensible starting point | Possible next step |
|---|---|---|
| Team member or new project coordinator | Project Management Foundation | Practitioner after some experience |
| Project manager in a PRINCE2 organization | Foundation then Practitioner | PRINCE2 Agile if teams use agile |
| Scrum master or agile team lead in a governed environment | PRINCE2 Agile Foundation | PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner |
| Project board member or sponsor | Foundation, or a short board briefing | Program management Foundation |
| Project office or PMO analyst | Foundation | P3O Foundation |
| Program or portfolio manager | Foundation for vocabulary | Program or portfolio management |
Worked problem
Combined course or separate courses?
A provider offers Foundation training and exam for 1,400, Practitioner training and exam for 1,600, or a combined five-day Foundation and Practitioner course with both exams for 2,500 (all in the same currency). The combined course takes a full week off work; the separate courses take two days and three days several months apart. What is the saving, and what else should you weigh?
Show solution
- Separate total: 1,400 + 1,600 = 3,000.
- Saving with the combined course: 3,000 − 2,500 = 500, or about 17 %.
- Weigh the intensity of sitting two exams in one week, whether your employer can release you for five consecutive days and whether you will apply the method between levels.
Answer: The combined course saves 500, but the separate route gives time to absorb the method and apply it before Practitioner.
There is no single right answer. Many candidates take the combined route because it is efficient; others prefer to pass Foundation, apply the method on a real project and return for Practitioner when the ideas have had time to settle. Lesson 11 shows how to compare the full cost of each route, including retake insurance, the manual and your time.
Checking a certificate on the register
Employers, clients and procurement officers increasingly verify certificates rather than accepting a photocopy. PeopleCert's verification service lets someone check a candidate's certificate using details the candidate provides, and digital badges link to an online record that shows the certification, the date it was earned and its status. Two practical consequences follow. First, keep your PeopleCert account details, including your name and email address, up to date, because they are how your records are found. Second, remember that an unrenewed certificate will show as needing renewal, which an employer may notice during a background check.
Worked problem
Reading a job requirement
A posting for a project manager says: "PRINCE2 Practitioner (current) or PMP required; PRINCE2 Agile an asset." Dana holds PRINCE2 6th edition Practitioner from 2021 that she has not renewed, and no other certification. What should she do before applying?
Show solution
- Her Practitioner certificate passed its three-year renewal date in 2024, so it will show as needing renewal.
- The word "current" suggests the employer will check status.
- She could renew by passing a new exam in the suite, such as PRINCE2 7 Practitioner or PRINCE2 Agile Foundation, which would also earn the asset the posting mentions.
Answer: Renew before applying, ideally by passing PRINCE2 Agile Foundation, which both renews her suite certificates and matches the asset listed.
Reading requirements carefully, and knowing how renewal works, can turn an outdated certificate into an advantage rather than a liability.
When you shortlist providers, it is reasonable to ask for evidence of pass rates, the trainer's experience of applying PRINCE2 on real projects, sample materials and the provider's policy if you need to move a course date or resit an exam. Reputable providers answer these questions readily. Reviews from past learners can help too, but read them with the same healthy skepticism you would apply to any marketing.
Common mistakes
MistakeAssuming any PRINCE2 course is accredited.
InsteadCheck that the provider is accredited by PeopleCert for the current edition.
MistakeBuying a cheap Practitioner package without the official manual.
InsteadMake sure you have the printed manual for the open-book exam.
MistakeConfusing PRINCE2 Agile with PRINCE2 Project Management.
InsteadTreat them as separate certifications with their own exams.
MistakeThinking PeopleCert is a member-led association like PMI.
InsteadRecognize it as a commercial owner, publisher and exam institute.
MistakeChoosing a certification by popularity alone.
InsteadMatch the certification to the decisions your role involves.
