What you'll learn

  • Find internal forces with the method of sections and compute normal, average shear and bearing stresses in members and connections.
  • Read a stress–strain diagram and use Hooke's law, Poisson's ratio and the shear modulus to relate stress and strain.
  • Calculate deformations, thermal stresses and forces in statically indeterminate axially loaded members.
  • Analyze shear stress and angle of twist in solid and hollow circular shafts, including power transmission.
  • Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams using equilibrium and the load–shear–moment relationships.
  • Compute bending stresses in beams with the flexure formula and select sections by section modulus.
  • Compute shear stresses in beams with the shear formula and check webs and built-up sections.
  • Combine axial, bending, torsional and shear stresses, including eccentric loads, at critical points.
  • Transform stresses to find principal stresses and maximum shear stress, by equations and with Mohr's circle.
  • Analyze thin-walled cylindrical and spherical pressure vessels and interpret strain gauge readings.
  • Find beam slopes and deflections by integration, superposition and energy methods, and solve indeterminate beams.
  • Predict buckling loads of columns with Euler's formula and effective lengths, and recognize when inelastic buckling governs.
