Construction Materials and Methods I
Sitework, foundations, concrete and masonry: soils and site preparation, earthwork and compaction, shallow and deep foundations, concrete mix design, formwork, reinforcing, placing and curing, masonry, and the inspection and testing that prove the work, with Canadian (CSA A23.1/A23.2, A371, A179, NBC, provincial OHS) and US (ACI 318/301, ASTM, TMS 402/602, OSHA) practice.

What you'll learn
- Interpret a geotechnical report and borehole log, including soil classification, groundwater and frost information
- Plan site preparation, including surveys, utility locates, clearing, stripping, erosion control and demolition handoff
- Calculate bank, loose and compacted earthwork volumes using swell and shrinkage factors and plan safe excavation support and dewatering
- Explain Proctor tests and field density testing and calculate dry density and relative compaction for fill and subgrade
- Describe shallow foundation types and check footing areas against allowable bearing pressure and frost requirements
- Distinguish driven, drilled and helical deep foundations and the tests that verify their capacity and integrity
- Explain the roles of cement, SCMs, aggregates, water and admixtures and proportion a concrete mix by absolute volume
- Estimate fresh concrete pressure on formwork and describe safe shoring, stripping and reshoring practices
- Identify reinforcing bar grades and sizes, required cover and splices, and estimate rebar quantities and weights
- Plan concrete placement, consolidation, joints, finishing and curing, including hot and cold weather measures and maturity
- Describe masonry units, mortar, grout and wall systems and estimate unit quantities for masonry walls
- Apply field tests, cylinder strength calculations and acceptance criteria within an inspection and test plan
